Botulinum toxin type A is a protein naturally produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium.
When injected, botulinum toxin causes muscle relaxation in the treated areas. In cosmetic medicine, this procedure smoothes away the more pronounced wrinkles that can make the face look tired or bitter, thus restoring a serene and relaxed appearance to the face.
WHAT CAN WE TREAT?
With botulinum toxin, we can reduce wrinkles and fine lines on your face. Botulinum toxin treats among other things:
- Vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows (frown lines)
- Wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)
- Horizontal forehead wrinkles
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) including the armpits, hands and feet
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
When injected, botulinum toxin causes muscle relaxation in the treated areas. In cosmetic medicine, this procedure smoothes away the more pronounced wrinkles that can make the face look tired or
bitter, thus restoring a natural rested and relaxed appearance to the face. This toxin helps to limit the contraction of a muscle locally; hence the reason is mainly used to treat expression lines on the face.
Anesthetic cream if necessary
Following a detailed examination of the face, the doctor injects botulinum toxin into the determined areas. The treatment lasts about 15 minutes. Nowadays the Juvapen automatic injector is used almost exclusively. It allows a more precise treatment, painless and without hematomas.
NUMBER OF SESSIONS
1 session followed 15 days later by a touch-up session.
A slight transient asymmetry or heaviness in the eyelids. It is also possible to observe small bruises, redness and to experience headaches. These side effects are all transient.
Results start to appear between 3 and 7 days after the injection. The effect of botulinum toxin gradually wears off and the muscles recover their function about 4 to 6 months after the injection. For this reason, I recommend repeating the treatment after about 4-6 months.
